| Trying To Buy A Military Hummer |
|
If you're ever had a taste to drive a really big off-road vehicle like the military Hummer, also known as HMMWV (High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle) or Humvee, you'll be disappointed to learn that you are only allowed to drive the commercial versions made by General Motors, the H1, H2, and H3. You see, for safety reasons, the government won't sell Humvees to the public directly, and officially, you can NEVER own a driveable military hummer. The reasons provided by the Department of Defense is that these military vehicles do not pass the DOT standards and are therefore not suitable to be driven on roads and highways. Tragically, the Humvee will usually end up being sold as scrap. However, there are ways around these laws and policies, as it is possible to purchase a "surplus military Hummer" (if you have $30,000 or so), from a broker, an intergovernmental agency, or the Defense Reutilization and Marketing Service, that is able to supply these reconstructed models. Although technically you are not supposed to own a "drivable" military Hummer. Another obstacle in purchasing a used Humvee, like at a military Hummer auction is that the government is so fond of these vehicles and their value in action, is that they tend to hold on to them themselves, repair them, or buy them back so that they can be put back in the field. However, it is still possible, if challenging, to try and buy one for yourself. You just need to know where to look. Perhaps if you owned your own country, you might be able to get a deal. |
